Here is a funny post from Brad Keefauver's blog at Sherlock Peoria: "Sherlock Smackdown: Benedict Cumberbatch versus William Gillette." Instead of the common "Cumberbatch vs. Miller"debate that has occupied many fans of the contemporary Sherlock Holmes incarnations, Keefauver pits Cumberbatch against the original stage Sherlock: William Gillette, who portrayed Holmes onstage approximately 1,300 times, between 1899 and 1923. Gillette was quite a popular Holmes in his day. Here's an example of Keefauver's reasoning:
Benedict Cumberbatch . . . on several "Sexiest Man Alive" lists in popular press.
(Incidentally, I am from Chillicothe, IL, which is just 20 miles north of Peoria, so I feel a certain affinity to my fellow Sherlockians from Peoria County.)
I'm a stay-at-home dad, and Director of Music Ministries at a United Methodist Church in Mt. Juliet, TN. And a longtime fan of Sherlock Holmes.
